Math Placement

Each major at the UA has a specific math requirement. In order to register for a math course, you must satisfy the course's prerequisite and eligibility criteria. LING 178, MCB 181, CHEM 151, 152, ENGR 102, PHYS 102, 131, 141, or MATH 105, 111, 112, 113, 115A, 120R, 124, 125, 160, 263 and 302A, all require a specific catalog course prerequisites, and a specific math placement code (MATH1 and MATH2 Code ).

Students can meet the eligibility requirements through Math Department approved prerequisite course work, completed generally within the last 18 months, or through the Math Placement Test. SAT and ACT math scores are not used for placement. Please note that all incoming freshman are required to take the placement test prior to enrolling in a UA Math course. Freshman and Transfer students should refer to information in the Online Academic Tour

Students with college level Math Transfer credits or AP, IB, or CLEP exam credits, should review the College Math Transfer and Testing Credit information.

The UA Math Placement Test, ALEKS

The purpose of our placement process is to determine, based on your mathematical background and current mathematical ability, which MATH courses are appropriate for you. Past experience shows that the Math Placement Test may be the clearest indicator. For this reason, we encourage all students to take the ALEKS UA Online Placement Test; however, if you are an incoming transfer student, or have a Math Department approved math transfer course, you may be able to use that for placement.

Placement into a particular UA MATH course does not guarantee any particular grade in the course.

Affected Courses

The Math Placement rules were updated in March 2009. A student is eligible for courses based on the current rules or the student's current math placement code.

The ALEKS Prep for Calculus exam is recommended for placement into Math 120R, 124, and 125. For placement into other math courses, ALEKS Prep for College Algebra is recommended.

Math Requirements-General Strand

Each UA major has a math requirement, which is determined by the major. Please refer to your major and degree requirements, or consult your academic advisor if you have questions about what course to take to satisfy your UA General Education Math Requirement.

Students may satisfy the Math 105 or PHIL 110 requirement through placement. Please see rules below.

  • In order to satisfy this requirement, the test must be administered on the UA campus, per Proficiency and Exemption Exam Procedures and General Regulations stated in the UA General Strand Math UA Policies in the UA catalog. The test will be administered through the UA Testing Office on behalf of the UA Mathematics Department. .
  • The student can take the examination twice during the student's first semester at UA.
  • There is a $45 proctoring fee along with a $20 testing fee.
  • For Fall 2009 incoming students, a score of 60% or higher is required on the UA ALEKS Prep for College Algebra or Prep for Calculus test administered through the Testing Office.
