Which ALEKS Online Test Should I Take?

It is ultimately, it is the student's responsibility to determine the math requirement for a particular major, in order to determine which ALEKS online assessment test to take. The Prep for Calculus exam is recommended for students who want to take Calculus I (Math 124 or 125), or if Calculus I is a required course. If Calculus I is not required, then your College generally recommends the Prep for College Algebra ALEKS online assessment. General College placement test recommendations are listed below:

  • College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
    Math requirements in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences vary. If you are interested in Agricultural Systems Management, Crop Production, Environmental Sciences, Plant Sciences, or Natural Resources, this college recommends the Prep for Calculus exam since Calculus I is generally required. All other majors in this college require one of the following: College Algebra (Math 112), Elements of Calculus (Math 113), or Math For Business Decisions (Math 115a). The Prep for College Algebra exam is recommended.
  • College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture
    College Algebra (Math 112) and Trigonometry (Math 111) are required for students in the College of Architecture, and this college recommends the Prep for College Algebra placement exam. Please note that this college will also accept Calculus (Math 124 or 125) or AP Calculus credit in place of Math 112 and Math 111. Students interested in the Calculus option, who do not already have Calculus I college credit, should talk to an advisor and consider taking the Prep for Calculus Exam.
  • College of Education
    Most majors take either Math in Modern Society (Math 105), or Logic and Critical Thinking (Phil 110). This college recommends the Prep for College Algebra placement exam.
  • College of Engineering
    Calculus I (Math 124 or 125) is required for all students in the College of Engineering. This college recommends the Prep for Calculus placement exam.
  • College Fine Arts
    All majors in the College of Fine Arts require Math in Modern Society (Math 105) or Logic and Critical Thinking (Phil 110). The Prep for College Algebra placement exam is recommended.
  • College of Humanities
    All majors in the College of Humanities require Math in Modern Society (Math 105) or Logic and Critical Thinking (Phil 110). The Prep for College Algebra placement exam is recommended.
  • College of Optical Sciences
    Calculus I (Math 124 or 125) is required for all students in the College of Optical Sciences. This college recommends the Prep for Calculus placement exam.
  • College of Pharmacy
    The UA College of Pharmacy requires Math 113 and the Prep for College Algebra placement exam. Pharmacy requirement for other institutions vary and some student may want to take Math 124, Calculus I. If so, the Prep for Calculus placement exam is recommended. Any questions about this should be directed to the Pharmacy advisors.
  • College of Science
    Since most majors in the College of Science require Calculus (Math 124), the Prep for Calculus placement exam is recommended. PLEASE NOTE: The Prep for College Algebra exam is recommended only for Speech and Hearing Sciences majors in the College of Science.
  • College of Social and Behavioral Sciences
    Majors in the Social and Behavioral Sciences may require at least one of the following courses: College Algebra (Math 112), Elements of Calculus (Math 113), or Math in Modern Society (Math 105). A few majors can also take Logic and Critical Thinking (Phil 110). The Prep for College Algebra placement exam is recommended.
  • Eller College of Management
    Eller students have two options: 1) Calculus I and II (Math 124 and 129), or 2) Mathematics for Business Decisions I and II (Math 115A and 115B). Students interested in the Calculus I and II option should take the Preparation for Calculus placement exam. Students who are not interested taking Calculus I and II should take the Preparation for College Algebra exam. Students interested in Finance or Economics should consider the Math 124 and 129 option.
  • College of Medicine (Physiology)
    Physiology requires Calculus I (Math 124) and recommends the Prep for Calculus placement exam.
  • University College, Undecided majors, Pre-nursing, or students interested in Pre-health or Pre-law
    The Prep for College Algebra assessment is recommended for students in Pre-nursing, or who are interested in Pre-health or Pre-law. Browse the list of recommendations above if you are undecided.
