Overview
The Department of Mathematics at The University of Arizona offers one-year appointments to individuals who are dedicated to quality instruction in mathematics. These positions offer an excellent opportunity for high school teachers on leave of absence to work with other teachers to contribute to, and be part of, an innovative university learning environment. These positions are part of a National Science Foundation-funded pilot program to establish a Certificate Program in teacher leadership.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibility is to teach one entry-level course (such as college algebra, computer-based Business Math Decisions I & II, precalculus, or calculus) per semester and to co-teach one integrated mathematics & pedagogy course for students students in a Masters program for middle school teachers. In this latter role they will work with the students in the course, review pre-requisite materials as needed and assist with meetings and related training sessions. Each semester they will choose between taking a course in the mathematics major and working with the Center for Recruitment and Retention. Further, these teachers will take part in a professional seminar in Mathematics and Teaching and make a presentation each semester. Summer teaching is available and may be required (with proportional extra remuneration).
Qualifications
Teaching experience and a bachelor's degree in mathematics, mathematics education, statistics, or a related field with a significant component in mathematics is required, along with Secondary Teacher Certification and at least 5 years of experience teaching mathematics in high school or middle school (8–12). A master's degree or higher is preferred.
Compensation
The starting academic-year salary is $40,000 for a full-time appointment. Faculty employed at least half time for the entire year enjoy full benefits and privileges.
