P.E.T. Scans, Critical Learning Periods and Some Implications for Mathematics Instruction

Series: Mathematics Instruction Colloquium
Location: Math 501
Presenter: Eric & Linda Langner, Mathematics Department, University of Arizona and Canyon del Oro High School

We will discuss P.E.T. scan results confirming age of onset and duration of critical periods of learning. Critical periods are characterized by very strong capability of the brain to grow complex neural networks and thus to learn. After a critical period ends, the brain's ability to develop is drstically reduced or even ended. Math programs need to be designed to work effectively with the potential to critical periods and the children who have already been affected both postively and negatively by them.

Refreshments will be served beforehand in Math 501.
