Talking about Race and Gender Stereotypes with Students

Mathematics Instruction Colloquium

Talking about Race and Gender Stereotypes with Students
Series: Mathematics Instruction Colloquium
Location: MATH 401
Our next Math Instruction Colloquium will be held on Monday, November 6th from 4:00 - 5:00 pm in Math 401. During this session - Adi, Marta and several faculty members will be sharing about the Adelante project. The following is a description of the session. Discussing race and gender stereotypes with students can be challenging. Yet, the research on stereotypes has documented the omnipresence of stereotypes in STEM and higher education and the toll it takes on students to manage them in their everyday lives. To start our discussion, instructors from Project Adelante will share their experience in talking about race and gender with students, some of its challenges, and how they managed them. The instructors will also practice using a protocol to interview some of the peer mentors in Project Adelante about their experiences being a STEM student. We hope that together, we can come up with helpful ideas on how to talk to students that can support us in building more meaningful relationships with them.

We invite you to come have a snack and drink (tea or coffee) and learn more about this valuable ability.

If you would like to attend but are unable to make it in person, we will stream the session in Zoom. Here is the link: https://arizona.zoom.us/j/84520935405. Password: teaching.
