A Tale of Heavy Tails

A Tale of Heavy Tails

Series: Special Mathematics Colloquium
Location: ENR 2 s395
Presenter: Javier Rojo, Oregon State University

This introductory lecture provides a systemic presentation of the various classifcation approaches for probability distributions in terms of their tail heaviness. The concept of tail-heaviness has genrated a lot of interest throughout the years. A google search can generate more than 16 million documents for the query "long tail statistics." The lecture will make connections among some of the classification methods and conclue that the method based on residual life function provides the clearer and more convenient method of classification.
