Localization of particles in a noisy Paul trap

Small charged particles can be localized by a quadrupole trap designed by Wolfgang Paul (not to be confused with Wolfgang Pauli, who also got a Nobel Prize, but forty-four years earlier).  Responding to a question asked by a physics group in Barcelona, we are studying the influence of noise on the properties of a Paul trap, focusing on the behavior of the localization length as the mass of the particle goes to zero.  This will be a preliminary report on a work in progress.
