Spaghetti measure and its cousins

Spaghetti measure and its cousins

Series: Mathematical Physics and Probability Seminar
Location: Math 402
Presenter: Ibrahim Fatkullin, University of Arizona

Take a bowl of spaghetti. Pick two random ends and link them; keep doing this until all spaghetti are connected into a family of loops. What is the statistics of this family: their size distribution, mean loop length, what is the size of the largest loop, etc? This talk is an introduction to the statistical mechanics of set and integer partitions, measures on the symmetric group and other related objects.
