Active learning in my undergraduate classes
Active learning in my undergraduate classes
Series: Mathematics Instruction Colloquium
Location: Math 402
Presenter: Elizabeth Lugosi, UA Math
In order to improve the results of students in undergraduate college algebra and business calculus classes, I:
•encourage students to solve exercises in groups and explain the solution on the board,
•motivate them to discuss different possible solutions,
•minimize non-interactive lecture-style teaching, instead let students advise the next steps of the solution.
I strongly believe that in mathematics, ‘learning is not a spectator sport’. I often tell my students to get their hands dirty with math, for which group-work provides excellent opportunity.
