Topological Data Modeling

Topological Data Modeling

Series: Tripods
Location: ENR 2 S210
Presenter: Dr. Gunnar E. Carlsson, Stanford University

Mathematical modeling is often construed to mean modeling by algebraic or differential equations, but much of the data coming out of biology, social sciences, and the business world is quite complex, and not so well suited to these kind of methods.  The mathematical discipline of topology, the study of shape, provides alternate methods for  modeling complex data sets, where the output instead is a topological network.  This talk will describe how this works, the properties and functionality of the models, with numerous examples.
