AWM WORKSHOP: The MAA's Instructional Practices Guide: Reaching All Students Through Engaged Learning

Series: Workshop
Location: MTL 120
Presenter: Elizabeth Burroughs, Montana State University

Released in January 2018, the MAA Instructional Practices Guide was written with the intent to answer "what can mathematicians do to address inequity?" The IP Guide focuses on teaching, using what is known about ambitious teaching practice in the mathematical sciences. The authors challenge mathematicians to resist the urge to rely on old habits in teaching, and to embrace the perspective that mathematics is accessible to all. With an emphasis on fostering student engagement, the IP Guide focuses on three core practices: Classroom Practices, Assessment Practices, and Course Design Practices. Recommendations are illustrated through vignettes and scenarios to consider.
