Math Awareness Week 2004 Schedule: The Mathematics of Networks
This year's theme for National Math Awareness Month is
The Mathematics of Networks.
We participate each
year with a week of activities. Everyone is invited to join the
Department of Mathematics in celebrating the relevance of mathematics
to everyday aspects of modern life.
All events are free and open to the public. Talks are for general
audiences. For more information, please contact

Monday, 19 April 2004
- Undergraduate talk sponsored by the
Math Cats.
Federico Chialvo, Undergraduate Mathematics Major, The University of
Arizona, will speak on A Connected Sum Operation, Maximally Connected
Planar Graphs and Coloring at 5:00 p.m. in
Mathematics Building room 501. Pizza will be served after the talk.

Pallavi Jayawant, Department of Mathematics, The University of Arizona,
will speak on Cheapest Cable Networks
at 4:15 p.m. in
Mathematics Building room 501.
Wednesday, 21 April 2004
- Two movies, Street Smarts, and Trains, Planes, and Critical Paths, will be shown at 4:00 p.m., César Chávez Building room 110. The
films (1/2 hour each) describe the elementary concepts of graph theory
and are for all audiences.
Thursday, 22 April 2004
- Special Talk.
Carlos Castillo Chavez, Joaquin Bustoz Jr. Professor of Mathematical Biology, Department of Mathematics & Statistics, Arizona State University, will speak on The Possible Use of Mathematical Models in Homeland Security at 11:00 a.m. in César Chávez Building room 200.
Friday, 23 April 2004
- Mathematics Awareness Week Keynote Address.
Fan Chung, Akamai Professor in Internet Mathematics, Department of Mathematics and Department of Computer Science and Engineering, The University of California at San Diego, will speak on The Mathematics of Internet Networks at 1:00 p.m. in Koffler Building room 218. (You may enjoy reading Dr. Chung's related essay.)
A reception with refreshments will follow the talk.
