Each degree program has considerable flexibility in subject matter. However, please read the specific degree requirements carefully so that you request admission to a program consistent with your objectives and background. In particular, Ph.D. students should plan to take the qualifying examinations in the late summer following their first year in the Ph.D. program.
Courses carrying graduate credit at the University of Arizona are numbered starting at 500. Some courses are dual-numbered, having both a 400 level number and a 500 level number. These courses are open to graduate students for graduate credit by registering with the 500 level number. In addition, at most six units of 400 level course work in a minor outside the Department of Mathematics may be part of a graduate degree program. A minimum grade point average of 3.0 is required by the Graduate College.
