Students making good academic progress and fulfilling their teaching obligations can count on support in the form of teaching assistantships (TAs), VIGRE fellowships, and Research Assistantships. MA and MS students will be supported for up to two years. PhD students will be supported for up to five years, or in some cases six years, including any time supported as a Master's student.

Salaries for TAs, RAs, and VIGRE fellowships are currently in the range of $7371 to $8060 per semester. (Your pay increases as you pass certain milestones like the qualifying exams and progress from Teaching Assistant I and II to Teaching Associate I and II.) There is also the possibility of support in summer months through summer teaching, VIGRE fellowships (about $1500 per month), and internships (which can be quite lucrative).

TAs, RAs, and fellowships include a full waiver of out of state tuition and a waiver of 60% of registration fees. This 60% remission of fees is scheduled to go to 100% in the next 2 years. Moreover, the mathematics department has enough fee waivers so that all first year students and most students in later years making good progress will not have to pay any registration fees. Thus we expect that students entering in 2004 and later years who make good academic progress will have to pay only minimal fees (on the order of $50 per semester) during their entire graduate careers.

When comparing assistantships and fellowships across universities, it is important to take into consideration the cost of living. Housing in Tucson is quite inexpensive compared to other popular locations. See the Living in Tucson pages for more information.
