Dates
Friday August 3 through Tuesday August 7, 2007Organization
The workshop will have three sessions each day (9-12, 1-4, and 4:30-7:30) with the evening session on the last day replaced by a party. Sessions will begin with about one hour of lecture and then there will be about 90 minutes for problem solving and discussion and 30 minutes for student reports. The lectures will be organized into three series on the core topics of linear algebra, calculus, and topology, with content based on a document called What every incoming student is expected to know. There will be problem sets corresponding to each lecture series and significant projects in which groups of students will learn some new mathematics and present it in a 1-hour lecture at the end of the workshop. There will also be a couple of sessions on practical matters like students' trajectory through the program and various opportunities.
The lecturers and topics are:
- Philip Foth:
- Topology
- Ryan Vinroot:
- Linear Algebra
- Nicholas Ercolani and Ken McLaughlin:
- Calculus
Several senior grad students and post-docs will be on hand to assist. They are: Yuliya Gorlina, Robert Jenkins, Tom Lagatta, Cameron McLeman, Tommy Occhipinti, Ben Polletta, and Jordan Schettler. In addition, we are fortunate to have the participation of Professor Nick Rogers, who has been involved in previous integration workshops.
Schedule
Distribution of name tags and meal cards, introductions, etc. will start at 8:30 on Friday. There will be coffee and donuts every day at 8:30. All lectures will take place in Math 401N.
