Recruitment Workshop

Each year in early March, the Department of Mathematics and the Graduate Interdisciplinary Program in Applied Mathematics invite a select group of potential graduate students to attend a workshop on Current Ideas in the Mathematical Sciences.

Prospective students arrive in Tucson on Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning. They may meet Saturday evening in their hotel with current graduate students for an optional get-acquainted session. On Sunday morning they have breakfast with graduate program directors, followed by a brief overview of the programs and a trip to a local attraction such as the Desert Museum with graduate students and faculty members. On Sunday evening there is generally a party/dinner at the home of a faculty member, giving further opportunities for prospective students, current graduate students, and faculty members to get acquainted with one another.

On Monday there are talks on current mathematical activities throughout the day, as well as opportunities for students to meet with individual faculty members to discuss research opportunities. On Monday evening there is a dinner at a local restaurant, followed by further fraternizing.

On Tuesday morning there are more talks and meetings with faculty. The prospective students return home on Tuesday afternoon.

Students interested in being considered for attendance at an upcoming workshop should request application materials from the Graduate Office.
