Tutoring Project

Website: Mathematics Teacher (Tutoring) Project

The Tutoring Project targets college students interested in exploring a mathematics-teaching career. These mathematically talented students enroll in a one-credit class (by application only). Applications are due on April 15th for the fall semester and November 18th for the spring semester. The class, Tutoring in the Schools, Math 196a, meets on Wednesdays from 4:00 - 4:50 P.M. The course focuses on tutoring techniques and practices and multiple approaches to problem solving. College students tutor three to four hours a week in selected middle and high school mathematics classrooms at $10/hr. In some cases, students will also have the opportunity to work with elementary mathematics coaches. The teachers with whom they work are selected based on their enthusiasm for mathematics and teaching, their student-centered classroom environments, and their knowledge of current NCTM supported practices. These teachers participate in a summer workshop designed to develop their mentoring skills and provide ways to capitalize on assistance in their classrooms
