Local TeX installation

Our Linux systems have the following TeX/LaTeX-related resources:

  • teTeX distribution (includes TeX, MetaFont, MetaPost, and many macro packages, including LaTeX and Xy-pic)
  • UA-classes (macros for Masters/Doctoral dissertations conforming to UA guidelines). There are two classes, "ua-thesis" and "my-thesis", the former based on LaTeX "report", the latter based on AMS LaTeX "amsbook". For instructions, read the DVI files in /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex/uaclasses. There is also a SWIG page with information on how to use these classes.
  • UA-letter (macros for UA Math letterhead). You should be familiar with the LaTeX letter class, which is documented in many books on LaTeX (or you might find some online examples by googling “latex letter”). The ua-letter class customizes the standard letter class. Some of the differences are documented in the DVI file in the directory /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex/local. As of 27Apr2003, the ua-letter class also works with pdfLaTeX.
  • FoilTeX. To view a manual: xdvi /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex/foiltex/foiltex.dvi
  • LyX, a graphical word-processor-like frontend to LaTeX. From a command line, use the command: lyx. Has builtin online help.
  • apacite (2005-06-06 version), a bibtex style for APA-style citations. To learn more, see the PDF on the CTAN apacite page.
