Who can access intranet.math.arizona.edu:
- This server can be accessed only from inside the math department (and from elsewhere, if you use our dial-up service or one of our proxies).
- Otherwise, you'll get this message.
- However, be aware that the security level is minimal: it is based entirely on the client's IP address. For example, our students using department-owned computers in M101/M102 can reach these intranet pages. On the other hand, internet search engines (like google.com) can not reach these pages.
How to publish pages on intranet.math.arizona.edu:
- Just put your files in a folder called pub_http_intranet in your puma/gila account home directory.
- The URL for your intranet website is: http://intranet.math.arizona.edu/~youraccountname/.
Purpose of intranet.math.arizona.edu:
To give various groups and individuals in the department a means of publishing "internal" information. Some examples follow.
- Sensitive documentation on our computer infrastructure is published at http://intranet.math.arizona.edu/~system/.
- Research groups can maintain both public pages on http://math.arizona.edu/ and internal pages here on intranet.math.arizona.edu. The public pages might contain finished research documents, a list of group members, perhaps some photos. The intranet pages might contain works-in-progress, home contact information, and perhaps a photo of the research group at a social activity.
- An individual could link from their public page to their intranet page, publishing home contact information on the intranet page. This gives other members of the department a means of contacting you but does not expose your private information on a public page. In particular, your private information won't be exposed to search engines (like google.com).
- Various departmental committees and staff groups might publish information that is considered internal to the department.
- Be creative. This is a resource for you to use or ignore as you see fit.
Possible future enhancements:
- If the need arises, and we have the resources, we will consider adding an internal search engine for these intranet pages.
- If the need arises, we might maintain a directory of people/groups publishing information here. (But we expect most people will find their way to pages here via links from the public website.)
