Department-level Opportunities

Research Opportunities

Our Undergraduate Research Assistant (URA) program provides opportunities to earn money while engaging in research. You might furthermore have an opportunity to present your research at a conference such as AMUC.

Teaching Opportunities

Our Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTA) program provides opportunities to earn money while engaging in teaching-related activites.

VIGRE Opportunities

The VIGRE program includes activities for undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdocs. See the main VIGRE page for a general overview of the VIGRE program. (Please contact the VIGRE director or an appropriate member of the management team if you have any questions.) Concerning undergraduate activities, VIGRE support is available to US citizens, nationals, and permanent residents pursuing research and teaching projects under the auspices of our Undergraduate Research Assistant (URA) and Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTA) programs. These projects get students involved in creating and communicating mathematics in collaboration with senior faculty, post-docs, and graduate students. Projects may extend over a semester or a summer. VIGRE also supports travel expenses of undergraduates (normally participants in the URA and UTA programs) presenting their results at conferences and poster sessions, as well as our annual undergraduate research conference AMUC. Contact the VIGRE management team for more details.

Tutoring Jobs

The Center for Recruitment and Retention of Mathematics Teachers offers an opportunity to observe dynamic teaching, attend tutor preparation classes for a credit, and tutor middle and high school students for pay.

If you would like to tutor privately, you may register your name on the tutor list that is maintained by the Mathematics Department Academic Office.

Grading Jobs

The Mathematics Department sometimes has funds to pay undergraduates for grading homework papers in lower-division courses (such as calculus). Working as a grader is a great way to earn extra money while obtaining valuable experience. For more information, please contact Tine Deemer or pick up a grader application form from the Mathematics Department Academic Office. To obtain a grading job in a particular semester, your completed application should be turned in prior to the start of that semester.
