Math 100 UTA Program

Math 100 UTA Program

The Math 100 UTA program serves our new Math 100 "Preparation for University-level Mathematics" course. This course is a combination of on-line and in-person instruction. UTAs, Undergraduate Teaching Assistants, are given a cohort of students to track through an on-line learning tool called ALEKS. Duties include grading, setting daily and weekly goals for students, in-person and on-line tutoring, and constant communication with students and the instructional team. For information about the Math 100 course, Math 100 UTA application process, duties, training, pay, and more, please see below.  (Under Construction)

Course Information
The main purpose of this course is to serve as a preparation for Math 105, Math 109C, Math 112, Math 113, Math 115a, Math 263 and Math 120R. Work in the course is part self-directed through ALEKS learning mode, and part interaction with the instructional team, including instructors and undergraduate teaching assistants, using an online classroom environment called Elluminate.
Content includes but is not limited to the following topics: linear, quadratic, polynomial, rational, and absolute value equations and inequalities, algebraic expressions, graphing techniques, factoring techniques, exponents and logarithms. Students who wish to continue to higher level math courses will have the option to work with additional course material in algebra and trigonometry to facilitate this preparation. This course by itself cannot be used to satisfy the general math requirement for any degree program.
While the course will not serve as a prerequisite to any math course, the final exam score will be used for placement purposes. (Students who wish to work towards Calculus placement will have to re-take the Prep for Calculus placement exam through the testing center and pay the proctoring fee.)

UTA role
The UTA, Undergraduate Teaching Assistant, is an integral part of the instructional team and works closely with students using the online classroom, Elluminate. This program is a combination of instant messaging, voice, screen, and file sharing services. Students will sign on to Elluminate during each class period so that UTAs guide them through their work in the ALEKS program both individually and in small groups. Students are able to utilize a screen sharing application as well as a virtual whiteboard in order to visually work through their problems in the online classroom.

Application Process
1. Download and complete the application; submit application and supporting documents as directed in the application form.
2. Once a complete application is received, you will be asked to take an on-line mathematics assessment through ALEKS.
3. After you take the assessment, you will be required to continue working through the topics in that course until you have completed 95% of the topics.
4. Once you achieved 95% in ALEKS, you may be contacted for an interview.
5. After the interview, you will be notified with an official letter of offer or rejection for the position.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Participating in a two-day training of approximately 8 hours each day prior to the start of the course
• Mastering the content students are working on throughout the semester
• Taking attendance
• Working through problems with students individually and in small groups
• Answering Tickets (E-mails), which are integrated in the UAMath website: Math 100 Website
• Attending weekly training meetings with the instructional team to improve tutoring skills.

Training:
Training will be done throughout the semester, and will culminate in an end of semester evaluation. The topics covered in the training may include, but are not limited to:
• Understanding ALEKS
• Encouraging student questions in an online environment
• Mastering Elluminate
• Using D2L from the instructor perspective
• Using the UAMath website
• Improving online tutoring techniques

Pay and weekly hours:
Pay for Math 100 UTAs begins at $8.50/hour. Prior experience will be taken into consideration when determining the rate of pay. Most UTAs can expect between 10-15 hours of work per week.
