Personal
Austin is an extremely vibrant and creative town, with culture and personality galore. Now I live in Tucson, and I am starting to get a feel for some of the fun things to do here. These are some of my favorite non-math activities.
Improv
I am a serious improv enthusiast and have been seen all over town (and, in fact, around the country) performing. I primarily perform with two troupes--Girls Girls Girls and Junk.
- Girls Girls Girls: We are both Austin's only all-female improv troupe AND the
oldest troupe in town (we celebrated our 5 year anniversary on October 19, 2007). We are also the only group in town that
specializes in long-form improvised musicals.
In 2006, we were voted the Best Improv Troupe by the Austin Chronicle's Best of Austin Readers' Poll. In April 2007, we produced the first annual Ladies are Funny Festival (LAFF), a celebration of women in comedy. LAFF '08 was a huge success! We had peformers from all over the country attend, and thanks to a grant from the City of Austin Cultural Arts Fund, the festival was bigger and better this time around. Details can be found on the webpage.
GGG was also reviewed in the Austin Chronicle, as a lead-in to the 2007 Out of Bounds Improv and Miniature Golf Festival. Check it out here.
LAFF was featured in the April issue of Bust Magazine and GGG was featured in the June issue of Venus Zine.
- Junk: We are a four person troupe that focuses mainly on telling improvised stories. However, we have all been performing together for years in different capacities, so we also explore other formats. Junk performed in the 2007 Out of Bounds Festival and will be seen in Wafflefest in November. Our Chronicle review is just a click away.
Theater
- I will be performing with Arizona Onstage Productions in the "pop-chamber-opera" Lost. It is a retelling of Hansel and Gretel, but it is much darker than the children's story I remember. I will be singing the parts of the Wampus Cat and the Bell Witch (who is a puppet, by the way). Its going to be a lovely/creepy production...see Arizona Onstage for more details.
- Normally I prefer to make up my lines on the spot, but during the 2007 holiday season, I performed in Yellow Tape Construction Company's The Ultimate Christmas Musical: the Musical. I dusted off my dancing shoes and my antlers in order to play the role of Dasher, the jock reindeer.
Mojo Kickball
When I'm not doing math or performing, it is likely that I am playing the new sport Mojo Kickball. It was invented here in Austin by my boyfriend Eric, and we have been playing it several times a month for over a year and a half. Mojo Kickball is played with 6(!) balls, and it's a combination of kickball, dodgeball, and tag. It's not for the feeble-minded nor the faint of heart.
Yoga
I am hugely addicted to yoga right now. In particular, I am in love with the Ashtanga classes at Yoga Yoga. Their studios are beautiful, and they serve delicious yogi tea after class. My goal for the summer is to be able to consistently do headstands without a spot.
