My current research centers on issues of equity in mathematics education. Being a descendent of both immigrants and of Indigenous peoples, I have a particular interest in issues surrounding Indigenous, Latina, and Latino students. I wish to explore factors that shape students’ understandings, perspectives, and beliefs about mathematics. The factors I wish to explore include patterns in mathematical discourse, how students are expected to engage in mathematical activities in the classroom, and how students use knowledge from their own home and cultural backgrounds. By understanding these factors, we would then be able to better determine how to facilitate students’ mathematical learning so that they have the opportunity to pursue their own empowerment through mathematics.
My own pursuit for the understanding of how to provide equitable opportunities for all students to engage in rich, powerful mathematical ideas will not end with the completion of my dissertation. I hope to continue my research as a professor in mathematics education, while continuing to serve students from Indigenous and Latina/o communities, as well as all other communities. Many people, including my family, my teachers, my professors, and my ancestors, have afforded me the opportunity to pursue such goals. I can only hope that I can assist in providing such avenues to such pursuits for all students.
