Departmental Hardware and Software
The following is a list of software and hardware supported by the
Department of Mathematics of the University at Arizona.
All purchases should be coordinated through Bob Borys. Bob can
be reached by e-mail (bborys@math.arizona.edu) or by phone
(520-621-2392). Note that computer components evolve quickly and that
better performing hardware may be recommended at the time of purchase.

Note: If you wish, the computer staff can replace
Microsoft Windows XP Professional by Red Hat Linux 8.0 (or
8.x). Typically, this will be the latest version of Red Hat, provided
it is not less than 3 to 4 weeks old (so that major .bugs. have been
worked out).
Software Information
- Sophos Antivirus is available free of charge through a site license to the University
of Arizona.
- WinEdt is available free of charge through a site license to the Department of Mathematics.
- Microsoft Office Suite can be purchased through Dell or from the CATS store.
- A perpetual Matlab license can be purchased for $500 per machine. This includes
maintenance (i.e. product updates and technical support) for the first 12 months;
an annual maintenance fee is required for further maintenance service. The cost of 5
licenses is $1,500 and the cost of 10 licenses is $2,200.
- A perpetual Maple license can be purchased for $495 per machine (plus shipping).
There is no further charge, unless one wants to upgrade the software. The cost of 5
licenses is $1,250 (plus shipping) and the cost of 10 licenses is $2,000 (plus shipping).
- A Mathematica license can be leased for $195 per year. Note that the price is negotiated
by the University each calendar year and is subject to change. The cost per
license for calendar year 2004 will be known in October 2003.
