The multifaceted Nature of the Influences of Culture on Learning and its Implications for the Teaching of Mathematics: A Cultural Modeling Approach

In this talk, Carol Lee examines how relations between thinking and emotion, perceptions and goal setting, and prior domain, social and linguistic knowledge and intersect. She further examines how these are influenced by the organization of instruction. She examines these dynamic relationships as they are shaped by cultural practices based on ethnicity and its intersections with class. She situates this discussion in the complexities of ethnicity and class among Latino/a populations and discusses implications for teaching.
