CEMELA, CPTM, and TODOS are co-sponsoring a two-and-a-half-day working conference on the mathematics education of K-12 Latino students for an invited audience of teachers, administrators, mathematics educators, mathematicians, bilingual/ESL educators, and policy makers. The conference will focus on issues of language, culture, and policy in the context of teaching and learning mathematics. The goal of the conference is to engage a broad community of researchers and practitioners in considering key issues related to the teaching and learning of Latino students.

The conference will bring together 150 scholars and practitioners for the purposes of learning from each otherís research and experiences, considering implications to their field, and identifying additional research areas, instructional materials or supports needed. It will serve to showcase and disseminate the work and outcomes of CEMELA through its most visible ambassadors, its Fellows and alumni as well as highlighting the findings of other researchers and the knowledge of practitioners grounded in teaching. CEMELAís attention to the development of theory and practice on how to turn language and cultural diversity into educational assets is relevant to the mathematics education of all students including all groups of linguistically and culturally diverse students.

The conference will be a platform to clearly, specifically, and substantially articulate what the challenges are, what we currently know, and finally what we need to know regarding the mathematics teaching and learning of Latinos. To this end the conference design organizes participants into groups on seven strands, student assessment, teacher education and professional development, policy, family engagement, curriculum, visions from the classroom, and transforming mathematical identities through after school settings. Each participant will focus on two strands. A work session will follow presentations by researchers and practitioners for the purpose of identifying implications, gaps, and next steps.
