March 2, 2009 - Dr. Barbara Rogoff
- Firsthand Learning Through Intent Participation, reading for Dr. Barbara Rogoff's March 2, 2009 video conference.
- My talk will examine a tradition for learning that my colleagues and I
think is common in many families with connections with Indigenous
practices of the Americas: Learning through intent community
participation. This is learning by observing and pitching in to
surrounding activities of importance in the family and community. I
will present research done in a Maya community in Guatemala, several
communities in Mexico, and several Mexican-heritage and
European-heritage US communities that shows cultural differences and
suggests that extensive schooling experience may compete with a
propensity to learn through keen observation and collaboration.
