Local Site Seminars
- The University of Arizona Spring 2005 Seminars
This spring the focus of the seminars was on building understandings across disciplines (e.g., mathematics, mathematics education, language and culture). Five formal presentations were given by various CEMELA faculty. The presentations were as follows:
- January 21, Rebecca McGraw on Level of Cognitive Demand as a Tool for Analyzing the Quality of Mathematical Instruction and Peter Wiles on Strands of Mathematics Proficiency: What do we want students to know?
- February 18, Eliane Rubenstein-Avila on Using Language(s) to Make Meaning in the Contact Zone
- March 25, Mary Carol Combs on Sheltered English Instruction and Arizona SEI Policies
- April 22, William Yslas Vélez on Cryptography: An example of mathematical modeling
- University of California Santa Cruz Spring 2005 Seminars
This spring the seminar emphasis has been on teacher professional development, with a focus on the upcoming activites with the partnering districts in relation to teaching mathematics to ELLs and issues of race, ethnicity, and equity.
- University of Illinois at Chicago Spring 2005 Seminars
This spring UIC has used its local seminars to read and discuss articles across the different disciplines with a particular emphasis on research of language and mathematics and on teaching mathematics to ELLs.
- The University of New Mexico Spring 2005 Seminars
This spring the seminar emphasis has been on defining the research agenda (in terms of both local studies at UNM and contributions to CEMELA-wide research questions). Another area of emphasis has been the professional development goals for the upcoming summer institute for teachers in Albuquerque.
