Activities for the 2007-2008 School Year at University of California, Santa Cruz
The UCSC Teacher Education Component is linked to a study of inservice teachers' use of academic language in mathematics when instructing ELLs. The professional development component of the project invited 10 teachers to the UCSC campus on a Saturday during the fall for an all day exploration of their classroom video analysis and readings/discussion of academic language use in mathematics. Each teacher was paired with a video partner; pairs met to discuss effective strategies for teaching ELLs based on the video analyses. Later, all teachers met to share what each pair had discussed. The day ended with teachers reading and discussing an article on academic language. Another professional development day was planned for the spring ‘08, when teachers continued their video analysis and engaged in additional readings and discussion.
