CEMELA will...

• Develop leaders in mathematics education by recruiting and supporting doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows to participate in research and teacher education activities related to learning and teaching mathematics in working class Latino settings.
• Conduct research by supporting faculty, doctoral students, post-doctoral researchers in collaborative research projects addressing learning and teaching mathematics for Latino students. CEMELA will address research in four areas: student learning; community and parents; teaching and teacher education; and policy.
• Strengthen pre-service and in-service teachers' ability to promote Latinos' achievement in mathematics by expanding pre- and in-service teachers' knowledge of mathematics and of linguistically and culturally responsive learning environments.
