• Classroom Protocol Training

  On August 25^th and 26^th, Rick Kitchen, CEMELA PI at The University of New Mexico (UNM), conducted a two-day training session on the use of a classroom observation protocol developed at The University of Wisconsin-Madison by Newmann and Secada. Rick has extensive experience with the protocol and in providing training and guidance in its use. The first day of training consisted of reviewing the five areas to observe in a classroom (intellectual support, depth of knowledge and student understanding, mathematical analysis, mathematical discourse, and engagement). Following this discussion, the 20 participants in the training observed video-recorded classrooms on which they applied the protocol. Lively discussions followed during which participants, with Rick's guidance, reviewed their ratings in order to come to a general consensus on final ratings in each of the five areas. On the morning of the second day, participants observed local middle or elementary school classrooms and applied the observation protocol. Time was then spent at each school debriefing and establishing group consensus ratings. A follow-up session was held in the afternoon with all of the participants to further refine their use of the instrument and plan for ongoing calibration opportunities at The University of Arizona (UA) and between the UA and UNM. Our plans are to use this rating instrument at UNM and UA for CEMELA research (and probably in the future at UCSC and UIC).
