Math 362: Introduction to Probability Theory; Fall 2007.

Textbook: The required textbook is Introduction to Probability and Its Applications, by Richard L. Schaeffer (2nd edition).

Course Policies.

The course policies will include information about grading policies, exam schedules and policies, etc. You should definitely read it.
Here's an approximate schedule of what we'll be doing this semester. Emphasis on the "approximate".

Homework:

There will be two types of homeworks - regular homework assignments (mostly problems from the book, will be due every 1.5 weeks or so) and computer assignments.
Regular homework:
  • Homework 1, Due Wednesday, August 29th: Chapter 2, problems 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 10.
  • Homework 2: Due Monday, September 10th: Chapter 2, problems 14, 16, 17, 25, 26, 27, 29, 30, 40, 47
  • Homework 3: Due Wednesday, September 26th: Chapter 3, problems 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12
  • Homework 4: Due Friday, October 5: Chapter 3, problems 24, 26, 27, 28, 29, 33, 35, 38, 40, 41, 46
  • Homework 5: Due Monday, October 15th: Chapter 3, problems 54, 56, 57, 58, 59, 61, 69, 70, 74, 75, 77, 84, 85. NOTE: IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU DO THESE PROBLEMS BEFORE THE TEST ON THE 12TH!!!
  • Homework 6: Due Friday, October 26th: Chapter 4, problems 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 11, 13, 21, 24, 27, 28.
  • Homework 7: Due Monday, November 5: Chapter 4, problems 30, 34, 36, 41, 42, 44, 48, 55, 57, 58, 59, 60. Chapter 7, problems 12, 17, 24, 29.
  • Homework 8: Due Monday, November 19th: Chapter 5, problems 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 11, 12, 13, 15
  • Homework 9: Due Wednesday, December 5th: Chapter 5, problems 17, 19, 23, 41, 42. Chapter 6, problems 2 and 6.

Computer assignments will be due sporadically, and will be done in Minitab:
Announcements:

  • Here is a calculus review sheet - i.e. do a bunch of derivatives and integrals. We'll be using a lot of calculus in the near future.
  • The three in-class exams are currently tentatively scheduled for Friday, September 14th, Monday October 8th, and Monday November 19th. These are still tentative and are subject to change.
  • The final will be Friday, December 14th from 8-10 AM in the regular classroom. This date and time is not changeable, and exceptions will not be granted, i.e. we'll be sticking to the University's exam policy.
  • Solutions to the first exam.
  • Solutions to the second exam.
  • Solutions to the third exam.
