Textbook: Partial Differential Equations: An Introduction by
Walter A. Strauss
Course Description
Properties of partial differential equations and techniques for
their solution: Fourier methods, Green's functions, numerical methods.
Course Policy
Attendance: Students are expected to attend every scheduled
class. It is the student's responsibility to keep informed of any
announcements, syllabus adjustments, or policy changes made during
scheduled classes. Students should be aware of University policies
regarding plagiarism and cheating.
- Midterm Examinations: (300 points). Three in-class exams are
scheduled (tentatively) for Feb 7 (Exam 1); March 11 (Exam 2), and April
21 (Exam 3). There are no make-up exams. Notify the instructor in
advance if you have a conflict with a particular exam date, or
emergencies.
- Final (200 points): Schedulue for Mon May 9, 2011, 10:30 AM-12:30
PM.
- Homework/Quizzes (100 points): Homework will be assigned and
collected on a weekly basis. Quizzes based on homework assignments will
be given once every two weeks and a total homework and quiz score,
equivalent to 100 points, will be computed.
- Grades: The total number of points available is 600 points.
Homework 1: 1.1: 1-4, 11, 12 pp 4-5; and 1.2: 3, 7, 9 pp 9-10. in
Strauss. (Due 1/26 in class).
