Using Algebra Blocks for Teaching Middle School Mathematics: Exploring a Variety of Topics presented by Cynthia Anhalt

Participants used algebra tiles to represent various algebraic expressions, to create area models of the product of two algebraic expressions, to determine the perimeters of various configurations, and to solve equations.

Numerous performance and process standards were addressed through the problems posed.
Some of those included are:
S5C2.5 Represent a problem situation using multiple representations, describe the process used to solve the problem, and verify the reasonableness of the solution.
S5C2.6 Communicate the answer to the questions in a problem using appropriate representations, including symbols and informal and formal mathematical language.
M3.3.1 Use an algebraic expression to represent a quantity in a given context.
M4.4.3 Calculate the area and perimeter of composite 2-dimensional figures.
M4.4.5 Solve problems involving area and perimeter of regular and irregular polygons.
M5.2.3 Analyze and compare mathematical strategies for efficient problem solving; select and use one or more strategies to solve a problem.
M5.5.5 Analyze and compare mathematical strategies for efficient problem solving; select and use one or more strategies to solve a problem.
M5.2.6 Communicate the answers to questions in a problem using appropriate representations, including symbols and informal and formal mathematical language.
M5.2.7 Isolate and organize mathematical information taken from symbols, diagrams, and graphs to make inferences, draw conclusions, and justify reasoning.
