The goals of Math Olympiads include the following:

  • To stimulate enthusiasm and a love for Mathematics
  • To introduce important Mathematical concepts
  • To teach major strategies for problem solving
  • To develop Mathematical flexibility in solving problems
  • To strengthen Mathematical intuition
  • To foster Mathematical creativity and ingenuity
  • To provide for the satisfaction, joy, and thrill of meeting challenges

Using Olympiad problems in a middle school class addresses many of the NCTM Process Standards in addition to curriculum standards which vary by problem.
Teachers are encouraged to create and enroll Math Olympiad teams by September 30, 2009 to be eligible for this year's competitions.
