Katie and Sarah are focusing primarily on bringing a new applied mathematics perspective to the mathematics courses.
During the first semester, the focus of the collaboration has been to incorporate outside mathematics into the standard curriculum to bring additional interest in STEM on the part of the students and to explore new ways to teach material in the mathematics classes. We have taught the students about Fibonacci Numbers, and we have approached fractions by relating them to numbers on a number line, mixed numbers, and parts of a whole through layered examples.
I am so impressed by the energy and enthusiasm my students have for learning. It's so much easier to teach to students who want to know what you're explaining and strive to ask and answer questions until they understand! Sarah is fantastic when it comes to flexibility and patience, and I am learning the value of explaining the same topic in many different ways to catch all the ways in which students learn.
