ABSTRACT Modeling macroscopic flows through porous media requires a means of bridging the gap between the macroscopic scales at which the media are simulated and the microscopic scales at which the resistance to flow arises. The macroscopic resistance to fluid flow, as quantified by the permeability, derives from the microscopic dynamics of fluid flow around complex and random solid morphologies. The consequence is that the permeability of a porous medium is a random function of position. The talk will provide a broad overview of some recent numerical investigations performed to obtain an improved understanding of the stochastic nature of permeability and its ramifications in the context of materials processing. |
