Homework & Quizzes

Typically, homework will be assigned every class and will be due in the next class.

Homework Policies

Homework will only be accepted at the beginning of the class period in which the homework is due. Late homework will not be accepted. Exceptions may be made in the case of an unavoidable absence with justifying documentation and, when possible, if prior approval is obtained from the instructor.
Show your work. Credit will not be given for answers which do not clearly show the necessary steps for obtaining the solution. Answers should be simplified as much as possible (e.g., reduce your fractions).
Homework must be stapled and legible.
Homework assignments will be posted on the class website.
Students are required to read the appropriate section prior to attempting homework. Some material may not be covered in class; the student will be expected to learn this material on his/her own. Reading math text is an acquired skill which requires practice; it is essential to your success in this and future math classes.
Students may discuss or work together on homework but each student must write his/her own solutions. Students may also discuss homework on the class listserv mailing list.
No extra credit will be available at any point during the semester.

Quizzes

There will be 3 exams plus the Final Exam. There may be additional quizzes either announced or unannounced. Grades from quizzes will be factored into the final homework grade. Course policy for missed quizzes is the same as that for missed exams (see “College Algebra Course Policy”).

Homework Grades

Each homework assignment will be worth 15 points. At the end of the semester the sum of all homework and quiz grades will be scaled down to 100 points (e.g., if there were 20 assignments and you scored 270 out of 300 possible points then your points would be scaled to 90 out of 100).
Not all homework problems will be graded. Selected homework problems will be graded for each assignment. Up to 5 points will be awarded for attempting every problem. Up to 10 points will be awarded for graded problems. Typically, 5 of the assigned problems will be graded.
One of your homework assignments is to visit the instructor at least once during his office hours. The student should come prepared with a math-related question.
Each student’s 2 lowest homework or quiz grades will be dropped at the end of the semester. This policy is intended to make the late homework policy more palatable.
Please review graded homework. The feedback which you are given is essential to the learning process and will help to prepare you for exams.
