Math 120R, Section 008
Introduction
This page will contain useful information about the
course and from time to time I will post important announcements here.
I would encourage you to stay updated by viewing this page regularly.
Office Hours :Monday: 10-11, Wednesday 2-3, Friday 11-12
Required
Materials:
- Text: Functions Modeling Change: A Preparation for
Calculus
- Calculator: A graphing calculator is required for his
class.
Some possibilities: TI-81, TI-83, TI-85, TI-86. Calculators that
do symbolic differentiation and integration such as the TI-92 and
TI-89 are not allowed in this course.

Grades
- There are 800 total possible points.
- Homework and quizzes are worth 100 points.
- Labs are worth 100 points.
- There will be four in-class exams, each worth 100 points.
- The final exam is worth 200 points.
- Grades will be awarded as follows:
- 90-100% = A
- 80-89% = B
- 70-79% = C
- 60-69% = D
- 0-59% = E
- An I (Incomplete) will be awarded only if all the following
conditions are met:
- The student has completed all but a small portion of
the
required work
- The student has scored at least 60% on the work
completed
- The student has a valid reason for not completing the
course
on time.
- The student asks for an incomplete before grades are
due (48
hours after the final).
- The student agrees to make up the material in a short
period
of time.

Labs:
- Labs will take place on Thursdays. See the lab policy page for more information.

Homework
- There will be a homework assignment for each section from
the
book which is covered in class.
- Each problem should be neatly written, with all
intermediate
steps included and the problem number clearly marked. Written
explanations should be included whenever appropriate.
- If your homework is too messy or unclear, I will not grade
it
(and you will not get credit for it).
- You are encouraged to discuss homework problems with me,
with
tutors, and especially with each other. However, you are required
to write up your own solutions.
- For each section, I will grade a subset of the assigned
exercises.
- Homework is due in class by 1:00 PM. No homework will be
accepted after this time.
- If you have an excused absence which you know about in
advance-e.g., if you have a Dean's excuse-your homework must be
turned in at the beginning of the class period preceding
your absence.
- Please staple your homework. I am not responsible for
keeping
track of multi-page assignments that are not stapled
together.
- Please do not use spiral notebook paper (or cut off the
fringes if you do).

Quizzes
- There may be occasional quizzes, particularly if there is
evidence that people are not doing the assigned reading.

Exams:
- Exam 1: September 15th
- Exam 2: October 13th

Final Exam:
- The final exam is cumulative
- Date and time: 12/12/05, 11:00AM-1:00PM The final will be in our regular classroom, not the lab room. Please study!!!! And make sure that you can solve every problem on the practice sheet.

Withdrawl:
- A student may withdraw from the course with a deletion from
record through September 16th. A student may withdraw with a "W" or
change to Audit through March 8th.
|
|
Attendance:
- Students with more than three unexcused absences may be
administratively dropped from the course. It is the student's
responsibility to keep informed of any announcements, syllabus
adjustments or policy changes made during scheduled classes.
|
|
Academic Integrity:
- Students are responsible to inform themselves of University
policies regarding the Code of Academic Integrity. Students found
in violation of the Code are subject to penalties ranging from
loss of credit for work involved to a grade of E in the course,
and possibly risk suspension or probation. The Code of Academic
Integrity will be enforced in all areas of the course, including,
but not limited to, tests and quizzes. For more information about
