Math 120R-16,18 Lesson 0, Homework Policies Fall 2009

You may answer the following questions in the space provided below or on your own paper (provided that, it the latter case, it is clear what question you are answering). Answer based on the Homework Policy, Homework Writing Policy, Homework Format (updated 26 Sep 2009), and Comments on Explanations information for Math 120R-16 and 18, part of which was handed out in class and all of which is available online.

  1. What are the three main purposes of homework?








  2. Short answer. At the end of the semester, your homework/in-class-work/WebAssign score counts as what percentage of your overall score in this course? (This will require some calculation; show how you get your answer.)








  3. Multiple choice. If solutions of more than one page are submitted without being stapled, what happens to the submitted solutions? Circle the letter corresponding to the best answer based on the homework policy.
    1. The homework paper is returned to you for stapling and submitting next class period.

  6. The information in the preceding problem identifies YOU. What other information should be included (at least on the first page) to identify the assignment you are turning in? (Answer briefly.)





  7. Suppose that a certain homework assignment contains the following problem.
            10. Solve the following equation for  x:    2x + 10 = 0.
    Student A and Student B submit the following “solutions” as their entire solution to this problem (no other information for this problem appears on their papers):
            Student A.    10.  -5.
            Student B.    10.  x = -5.
    Explain why, based on the course homework policies, these are unacceptable solutions.








  8. Give a correct and complete solution to the “Problem 10” in the preceding problem. Answer below if there is room, or on a separate sheet of paper.
