Lesson 35a.

NOTE: Be sure to read  Homework Format  and Homework Writing Policy BEFORE writing up your solutions to be turned in.

Postponed to Monday, March 31

As usual, if you have done this problem correctly before (in Lesson 35) ... .
Sect. 7:
7.3(b)*.
*  Give a careful, precise proof, using only elementary algebra (how do you prove that two sets are equal?). There is no need for tools which are not yet part of our toolbox, such as “limits”.
Comments:
  • There is a reason why the exercises 7.3(a)(b)(c) are grouped together in the textbook. This has to do only with the APPROACH to finding and proving your result; this is, however, NOT a case where you can USE previous results (e.g., part (a)) to derive this result, because there is different function involved in each part of this esercise (unless you replace 7.3(a) by a much more general result).
  • In Lesson 32, where 7.3(a) was assigned, it was pointed out that the range is the same as the image of the domain. This was mentioned only to help you with the APPROACH to the proof, since a proof of an image problem was done in class. There is, however, absolutely no need to mention in your proof that the range is the image of the domain; just use the definition of range.
