Lesson 53a.

NOTE 1: Be sure to read  Homework Format  and Homework Writing Policy BEFORE writing up your solutions to be turned in.

Due Wednesday, April 30

Sect 16:
Redo Part II of Lesson 53.  (Notation modified April 26 from original; mathematical content unchanged.) See comments below; more information may be available later.

  • See the Solution to Part I of Lesson 53 here.

  • Keep in mind the lesson you should have learned in connection with Project IV:  In Part I, you are asked to explain how to do a certain kind of proof. Don't ignore what you said in Part I when you do Part II !

  • As usual, keep the tools you are using as simple as possible to prove what you want to prove. In particular, while Archimedes may be useful in part of the proofs, you don't need the concept of “floor” or “ceiling”, either explicitly or implicitly.  And don't even use Archimedes unless you really need his help.

  • As usual, be sure it is clear what you are proving when you start a proof. This is particularly important when you are trying to prove that several statements are equivalent. Your reader should not have to read through and try to understand your PROOF in order to understand (i) what you are assuming and (ii) what you are trying to prove; you should make this clear.

  • Be sure to read  Homework Format  and Homework Writing Policy BEFORE writing up your solutions to be turned in. Your proofs should be presented in a way in which it is easy to follow what you are doing. This applies both to the legibility of your handwriting and the point of your arguments.

NOTE: Be sure to read  Homework Format  and Homework Writing Policy BEFORE writing up your solutions to be turned in.

NOTE: As stated on the Course Home Page, all due dates are tentative. Assignments, or parts of assignments, may be postponed to a later date.
