• Bring paper to class and be prepared to use your own paper for the exam.
  Write work, solutions, answers, etc., on one side of your paper only. Do problems so that your solution to problem  n  follows your solution to problem  n-1;  don't do problems side-by-side.
  You do NOT have to copy the exam problem onto your solution paper.

• Leave room for comments on your paper; in particular, if your paper does not have “built-in” margins, be sure to leave adequate margins on the top and the left of your paper. Do not start your work at the very top of the page, and do not start your work at the very left side of the page.

• If you do problems out of order, please do problems on separate sheets of paper so that the problems can be put in the correct order at the end. You might want always to start each problem on a new page.

  E.g., suppose you skip problem 4 and do problem 5 right after problem 3. Then start problem 5 on a new sheet of paper, and if you come back to problem 4, start it right after problem 3 or on a new page, and when you are done make sure the problems are in order: 3, 4, 5.

• Do your work as neatly as possible, then show your solution (if you get one) at the end.

  In particular, don't make me look in two or three different places for your work on a problem. Your work and your answer should be in proximity.

• While you should not spend a lot of time writing down detailed explanations if you have more problems to do, a solution with a good explanation is always better than a solution with no explanation (or an incorrect explanation).
  
  The number of points received (or lost) for an explanation depends on (i) how important the explanation is to the problem and (ii) how clear and complete your explanation is. Most problems require some explanation for full credit. A question with a "yes" or "no" answer, or with an "obvious" answer, almost always requires an explanation as a substantial part of the problem. Your time must be budgeted appropriately, however: Do not spend time writing an extremely detailed explanation if you have substantial parts of other problems yet to do and can do them.
