NOTE 1: Be sure to read Homework Format and Homework Writing Policy BEFORE writing up your solutions to be turned in.
NOTE 2: When two or more Lessons are to be turned in on the same day, please staple the Lessons separately and turn them in separately.
Due Wednesday, July 9
- 11.9 Problems:
- Redo Lesson 26, noting the following comments:
- Each problem assigned asks you to do TWO things. Don't forget the second.
- Be sure to read Homework Format and Homework Writing Policy BEFORE writing up your solutions to be turned in. In particular, it is difficult to discuss a graph in a way your reader can understand if the graph is not available on your paper. Also, note that the graphs in the book take up almost the entire width of the page; a graph on your paper which is barely one square inch is not a graph which can be discussed or interpreted easily.
- Each problem asks for a “proof” of a certain formula; Lesson 26 says that “the proofs are simply explanations of the formulas”. As in several previous assignments (e.g., Problem 1.7 in Lessons 1, 1b, and 1c), you are supposed to give a “proof” by explaining PRECISELY why the formula is true.
- In particular, you are not asked for a translation of the algebraic symbols into English words. You are not asked for a summary of the consequences of, or reasonableness of, the formula. What is wanted is a “proof” in the sense of a precise verbal explanation of why the formula is true.
- Note that neither formula contains explicitly any formula for “break-even point”. Thus there is probably no reason to include mention of this in the precise verbal explanation of why the formula is true.
- On the other hand, since the break-even point is an intercept of the graph, and intercepts are usually considered to be important points on a graph, a discussion of intercepts and break-even points might be relevant for the graph.
