The Life Outside of Mathematics

The Family
I am married to my wonderful wife, Rebecca. Rebecca is one smart cookie and has a B.S. in Mathematics and Secondary Education and a Masters in Guidance Counseling. We are both from New England and met way back in junior high school!  We were in the same mathematics class, but I was too scared to talk to her then!  We also have a wonderful boy, Caleb Jay. He is our new love of our lives and I am enjoying fatherhood! Here is a picture of Caleb.
Triathlon
I have been involved in Triathlon since coming to Arizona.  I love the comraderie and competition. I compete in many different distances and yes I have done a few Ironmans Here's some links to some local clubs if you are interested in getting involved with multi-sport:
  1. University of Arizona Tricats - This is the university's triathlon club and the place where I really got involved with triathlon.  I was president of the club last year! It can have any student on its roster but is limited to the number of non-students. They have regular workouts throughout the week and weekend.  Check them out at one of their regular Monday meetings.
  2. Desert Heat Triathlon Club - This is a relatively new coed club for all levels.  There are some very experienced hammerheads in the this group, which you could easily learn the ropes from.  They have regular weekend club workouts, try one out!
  3. Tucson Tri Girls - This is a club run by women solely for women.  This again is for all skill levels. I'm not sure what organized workouts are held on a weekly basis, but you could email them and ask!
Skiing
You would think that coming to the University of Arizona I couldn't possibly be interested in skiing, nor any cold weather sport!  Nonetheless being raised in New England I pretty much grew up at Jay Peak, VT,with two planks underneath my feet.  Jay is a very unique mountain, which averages close to 400 inches of snow a year.  As a comparison, that's more than Vail, Colorado! With Jay's endless glades and deep powder I've been hooked since.

I am also a multidimensional person who has also learned to snowboard as well, which has been a lot of fun!  Actually on my honeymoon that's what my wife and I did!  Why cruise when you can board?

Naturally as I come from the northeast here are my favorite mountains:

  1. Jay Peak, VT - my favorite :)
  2. Mad River Glen, VT - their motto is "Ski it if you can".  Need I say more? This place is awesome, just leave the boards at home this place only allows purebred skiers.
  3. Sugarloaf, ME - Only true above tree line skiing in the northeast.  This is a place that gets huge dumps of snow come February.  I had one of my biggest powder days there in 1999, the first day was all ice.  The second day was 3 feet of new powder.  They closed the top of the mountain, so one had to keep hiking back up! It was well worth it, new tracks every time!
  4. Mt. Washington, NH - Don't come here looking for a lift or for an easy day.  This is true backcountry skiing: hike in, ski wherever (Tuckerman's, Loin's Head, etc.), hike out dead tired.  This place is the whole reason why I bought a helmet!
