Architecture is
one of the best examples of the marriage between Art and Mathematics. Les
Wallach, FAIA, senior architect of Line
and Space Architects, is our keynote speaker Monday April 7.
He will talk about "Architecture of its time and place: the work of
Line and Space" on Monday April 7. Look at the events
page for more information.
Artists and Mathematics

Helaman
Ferguson is our keynote speaker for Friday April
11. He will talk about "Mathematics in Stone and Bronze." Look at
the events page for more information. Fergusonis
a sculptor and a mathematician. His art is inspired by mathematical
surfaces and structures. His creations grace many public spaces around
the country.
-
Helaman and Claire
Ferguson are the recipients of the prestigious Joint
Policy Board for Mathematics (JPBM) Communications Award (2002). The
citation for the 2002 award states: "JPBM Communications Award is presented
to the Fergusons, who together have dazzled the mathematical community
and a far wider public with exquisite sculptures embodying mathematical
ideas, along with artful and accessible essays and lectures elucidating
the mathematical concepts."
-
Claire Ferguson,
an artist in her own right, has won scholarships and prizes for her work.
More information about Claire's book
about Helaman's work can be found here.

Escher, one of the most popular artists of the 20th century
-
Kelly
M. Houle is a UA graduate (mathematics major). Her art uses anamorphic
distortions.
Todd
CadwalladerOlsker earned his Master's degree at the U of AZ in the
summer of 2002 under the direction of Dr. David A. Gay and Dr. Maria Robinson.
His work is on map-coloring problems, a topic that which lies at the intersection
of topology and graph theory.

Animation
-
Pixar
has created the movie Toy Story using mathematics to generate the
animations. The movie reflects more than nine years of creative and
technical achievements. Read all about Pixar

been studied extensively by mathematicians. Physicists and biologists have
an interest in knots, as do artists.
