Enriching School Mathematics

The Eisenhower Workshops are part of an ongoing project to enrich high school and middle school mathematics in Tucson. Local middle and high school teachers attend a two-week summer workshop on the University of Arizona campus. The main goals of these workshops are to help teachers become more familiar with the Arizona standards and to gain a better understanding of concepts in geometry, algebra, and statistics.

Teaching postdocs at the University of Arizona play a major role in all levels of this program. In addition to obtaining funding for the workshop, planning the workshop activities, and recruiting teachers who will participate in the program, postdocs write and present material and design group activities for workshop participants. They also assist teachers during group activities and help the teachers adapt workshop materials into lessons that can be used in the high school or middle school classroom. Once the summer workshop is over, teaching postdocs organize and facilitate several follow-up inservices during the regular school year.
