Grades

Your grades will be based on homework, quizzes, three in-class exams, and the final exam.

Homework/quizzes: There will be two types of homework in this course, online and written. Online homework will be submitted through a computer grading program called WebAssign. The advantage of WebAssign is that you get immediate feedback as to whether or not your answer is correct, and you usually have multiple chances to fix mistakes.

In addition, I have posted a list of written homework problems on the course website. You are responsible for doing the homework problems on your own -- they will not be handed in. Instead, each week there will be a short (5 minute) in-class quiz consisting of one of the problems from a section that we have just completed. The quiz problem will be completely identical the homework problem, so if you have understood the homework, you should have no problem finishing the quiz.

A final homework/quiz score of 100 possible points will be assigned (75 points from WebAssign, 25 points from quizzes). Your three lowest quiz scores will be dropped.

In-class exams: The in-class exams will be on Thursday, February 5; Thursday, March 12; and Thursday, April 30. Each exam is worth 100 points each.

Final exam: The final exam is a common department exam worth 200 points. It is scheduled for Monday, May 11 from 8:00-10:00 am. Additional information and a study guide can be found at the UA Calculus website. The University's exam regulations, found here, will be strictly followed.

Final grades:Your final course grade will be determined by a percentage of the 600 total possible points in the course (75 points from online homework, 25 points from quizzes, 300 points from the in-class exams, 200 points from the final exam). A: 100-90% B: 89-80% C: 79-70% D: 69-60% E: 59-00%.

Other information

WebAssign: To access WebAssign for our class, follow this link, and click on the "I Have a Class Key button". (Do NOT try to fill out the Username/Institution/Password fields; that won't work, even if you have used WebAssign in the past or are using it for another course this semester.) You can get the class key from me if you have lost it. There is a 14-day grace period (from the first day of classes) before you must purchase your access code for our class.

Calculators: You will probably find it useful to have a graphics calculator for this course. Calculators are permitted on the exams, and the exams will be written with the assumption that you will have a calculator with you.

Make-up tests: There will be no makeup tests, and the final exam cannot be rescheduled. So, do not make travel plans that conflict with any of the tests.

Students who require reasonable accommodations based on disability: Students planning to use accomodations for testing in this course need to provide the instructor with a letter of identification from the Disability Resource Center by January 23rd.

Attendance: Students are expected to attend every scheduled class, and to be familiar with the University Class Attendance policy as it appears in the General Catalog. It is the student's responsibility to keep informed of any announcements, syllabus adjustments or policy changes made during scheduled classes.

Withdrawing from the course: If you withdraw from the course by February 10, the course will be deleted from your enrollment record. If you withdraw from the course by March 10, you will receive a grade of W. The University allows withdraws after March 10, but only with the Dean.s signature. Late withdraws will be dealt with on a case by case basis, and requests for late withdraw with a W without a valid reason may or may not be honored.

Incompletes: The grade of I will generally not be awarded. The grade of I will be awarded only if all five of the following conditions are met:

  1. The student has completed all but a small portion of the required work.
  2. The student has scored at least 50% on the work completed.
  3. The student has a valid reason for not completing the course on time.
  4. The student agrees to make up the material in a short period of time.
  5. The student asks for the incomplete before final grades are submitted, which will occur very rapidly after the final exam.
