Mathematics, 2nd edition
Grades: Grades will be computed as follows:
- Homework: 45%
- Quizzes: 15%
- Final exam: 30%
- Participation: 10%
Homework assignments:
- Homework 4, due February 10: section 4.1, Mindscapes #3,4,6,8,15;
section 4.3, Mindscapes #3,4,5,9,20.
- Homework 5, due February 17: section 4.4, Mindscapes #3,4,5,16,20;
in #3, tell me how many flip symmetries each pattern has, not just which
of them has more than one; similarly for rotational symmetries in #4;
in #16, make a shape that is different from the solution the book gives;
section 4.5, Mindscapes #1,2,9,14,21; in #21, calculate the number of
vertices minus the number of edges plus the number of faces for each
truncated polyhedron.
- Homework 6, due March 3: section 4.7, Mindscapes #3,6,9,10,11;
section 5.1, Mindscapes #4,7,9,22,23
- Homework 7, due March 10: section 5.2, Mindscapes #3,8,9,12,28;
section 5.3, Mindscapes #4,7,15,23,29
- Homework 8, due March 17: section 7.1, Mindscapes #3,7,9;
section 7.2, Mindscapes #1,2,3,13,18,21,27
- Homework 9, due March 24: section 7.3, Mindscapes #1,2,5,12,20,22;
section 7.5 (not 7.4!!), Mindscapes #1,7,9,16. For #20 of section 7.3,
even if you
collaborate with friends on the assignment, you
must each have your own different trail. You may not do this experiment
once as a group and all hand in the same trail; if you want to
work as agroup, you should repeat the experiment several times as a group.
- Homework 10, due April 5: section 7.6, Mindscapes #1,2,3,5,11;
section 7.7, Mindscapes #1,7,14.18,19. In section 7.6, I found the table
of data for #1,2,3 confusing at first. The two rows of numbers are all
dollar amounts that the individuals in the survey are paying for Internet
access, a total of 23 data points in all.
- Homework 11, due April 12/13: section 8.1, Mindscapes #2,3,12,13,27;
section 8.2, Mindscapes #3,5,6,10,15.
