Introduction to Minitab

  1. Downloading A Minitab Worksheet

The worksheets will be linked to the relevant assignments. Right click on the link, select Save Target As..., and save the file to your disk.

  2. Starting Minitab

To start a Minitab session on the computers in the Main Library Information Commons, click on Start > Programs > Math Software > Minitab. When the Key Access message appears, just click on OK.

  3. Creating A Minitab Project

When you start a Minitab session, the window shown below will appear.

A Minitab Project can contain a Session window, one or more Worksheets, Graph windows, and a Project Manager. The Session window will appear in the top half of the screen when you start Minitab. All of the text output that you generate will appear in that window. The Data window will appear in the bottom half of the screen when you start Minitab. The Worksheet that contains the data that is being analyzed is displayed in a spreadsheet format in the Data window. The columns (C1, C2, …) correspond to the variables, and the rows correspond to the individuals. In addition, the Worksheet may contain stored constants (K1, K2, …, K1000). A Graph window will appear every time that you create a high-resolution graph. Those graphs will remain in the project unless you close them. The ReportPad in the Project Manager will be used to create the report that you will submit for credit. Output that is appended to the ReportPad may be edited and printed from that window. To append text output to the Report, right click on the appropriate section of the Session window and select Append Section to Report. To append a graph to the Report, right click on the appropriate Graph window and select Append Graph to Report.

  4. Using Menu Commands

Commands are used to tell Minitab what to do. They can be accessed from the menu bar located at the top of the screen by clicking on the menu name and then on the name of the command that is to be executed. For example, the ReportPad can be opened by clicking on Window > Project Manager and then on ReportPad. The window shown below will then appear.

If the name of the command is followed by an ellipsis (...), then a dialog box will appear. Enter the information that is required and close the dialog box. (Most often, the dialog box can be closed by clicking on OK.)

  5. Loading a Minitab Worksheet

Worksheets can be loaded into Minitab by clicking on File > Open Worksheet. The dialog box shown below will then appear.

Give the location of the file, enter the name of the Worksheet, and click on Open.

  6. Saving a Minitab Project

A Minitab Project can be saved by clicking on File > Save Project. The dialog box shown below will then appear.

Indicate where you wish to save the Project, enter a file name, and click on Save.

  7. Exiting Minitab

A Minitab session can be ended by clicking on File > Exit. If any changes were made to the Project since it was last saved, then you will be prompted to save the changes before closing the Project.

  8. Sources of Help

The MINITAB Manual to Accompany The Basic Practice of Statistics, 3rd Edition contains descriptions of the more common commands as well as examples that require the use of those commands. Online help can be accessed by clicking on Help > Search Help. You will then need to specify the topic for which help is desired. Several tutorials are also provided with the software. They can be accessed by clicking on Help > Tutorials. You will then need to specify the tutorial that you would like to view. Any of the Math 160 or Math 263 instructors can provide assistance with the software as well.

  9. A Typical Minitab Assignment

For a typical Minitab Assignment, you will

    1. either download a Worksheet from http://math.arizona.edu/~stats/mtb or create your own Worksheet,
    2. use the given menu commands to do the requested tasks,
    3. append all output to the Report, and
    4. insert your answers to questions about the output.
